Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about trade licences? We’re here to help.

Do I need a painters licence?

  • You will require a painters licence in most states across Australia. This ensures that you comply with regulations and standards. For example, in NSW, painters need a licence to perform any residential building and construction work, including strata, valued at more than $5000 in labour and materials. Holding a painting licence also ensures you meet the requirements of any regulating bodies which will avoid you incurring penalties or fines. You can also legally market your services and initiate contracts/tenders, both of which ensure you earn more than unlicensed painters.

How do I get a painters licence?

  • To become a licensed painter, you need to meet the minimum requirements in your state. For example, in NSW, here are the steps to becoming a licensed painter:

  • Complete a painting and decorating qualification with PRL Consultants

  • Undertake construction induction training and obtain a White Card.

  • Apply to Fair Trading NSW for your painting licence.
